The Normans descended from a group of Vikings (Norsemen) who were given a land grant in northwestern France in 911 by King Charles the Simple of France. Charles used the Normans as protection against other Vikings.
William, the Duke of Normandy, claimed the throne of England in 1066 and defeated the other main candidate, Harold II of Wessex.
